Songs with the Same Title – Thundermother Edition

For the first time ever, I’m going to cover a post-2000s band for my Songs with the Same Title series. The band is called Thundermother and they’re a Swedish all-female rock ‘n’ roll group; they’re basically a female version of AC/DC. I already know they’re amazing because I reviewed their latest album, Dirty & Divine (2025), for Metal Express Radio a few weeks ago. However, these guys aren’t popular in the states for some reason, which is why I’m doing this! Let’s give Thundermother the love and recognition they deserve, shall we? The last artist I covered for my Songs with the Same Title series was the Canadian rock trio, Rush, so if you haven’t already, check out that post right here!

How this works is, there are six rounds total. In each round, I’ll compare two songs with the same title, one by Thundermother and one by a different artist, and then, I’ll pick my favorite of the two. After the final round, I’ll tally up the score and pick the winner of the overall battle, Thundermother or the other artists. With all that said, let’s get on with the music!

“One for the Road” (2013) by Arctic Monkeys

“One for the Road” (2014) by Thundermother

First of all, the Arctic Monkeys’ “One for the Road” has a nice groove and I love the lyrics. It gives “self-reflective drinking song” vibes. Thundermother’s “One for the Road” is a straight up blues rock number with excellent vocals from Clare Cunningham; her low register is worth praising. This is probably because Lynyrd Skynyrd have a live album called One More from the Road (1976), but in my opinion, Thundermother’s song embodies what “One for the Road” is all about. It’s a travelling song with blues and southern rock influences (and a wicked bass line). Thundermother takes the win for round one.

“Deal with the Devil” (2009) by Winger

“Deal with the Devil” (2015) by Thundermother

I understand that Thundermother’s “Deal with the Devil” is the band’s tribute to Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead and that’s part of the problem. I’m not a big Motörhead fan, but I’ve warmed up to them in recent years thanks to their Another Perfect Day (1983) album. It’s a dang good tribute to them, but man, the song is fast, like two and a half minutes fast. Winger’s “Deal with the Devil” follows the stereotype of musicians selling their soul to the devil for rock ‘n’ roll and as cliché as it sounds, it’s pretty catchy! Given that Winger are part of the ‘80s hair metal movement, the song is loud, over-the-top, and a whole lot of fun! Winger takes the win for round two.

“Follow Your Heart” (1984) by Triumph

“Follow Your Heart” (2018) by Thundermother

This is tough because both songs are really good. Thundermother’s “Follow Your Heart” is very chill and relaxed for the first three minutes, before the adrenaline and tempo kick up a notch. Plus, Guernica Mancini’s vocals are amazing, very controlled during the slow parts and tough as nails during the heavier section. On the flip side, Triumph’s “Follow Your Heart” is classic ‘80s arena rock with melodic hooks and big backing vocals. It reminds me of the carefree and fun vibes of the ‘80s. Ah, the good old days that I sadly never got to experience. Triumph takes the win for round three.

“Bad Habits” (2020) by Thundermother

“Bad Habits” (2021) by Ed Sheeran

I’ll admit that Ed Sheeran has a good singing voice and he’s got a nice range going on; that’s the good part. Unfortunately, “Bad Habits” is one of those songs that’s meant for a club with a DJ that plays music from a computer, rather than using actual instruments. If that’s your cup of tea, that’s fine, but it’s not for me. Thundermother’s “Bad Habits” is a song about loving the danger of life and taking risks, and not giving a dang who knows about it; there’s definitely a punk rock attitude to the song. The bass line is really cool; it’s not just simple quarter notes, there’s some real intricate stuff going on there. For all the reasons given, Thundermother takes the win for round four.

“Hot Mess” (2009) by Ashley Tisdale

“Hot Mess” (2022) by Thundermother

Do yourself a favor and just skip the Ashley Tisdale song because that one really is a hot mess. The lyrics are cliché and unoriginal, which is ironic because when her Guilty Pleasure (2009) album was released, some critics complained that the songwriting was generic and unoriginal. It felt like Tisdale was trying too hard to be a bad girl and it didn’t work at all, which is a shame because I love “It’s Alright, It’s OK” from that same album. Thundermother’s “Hot Mess” is absolutely brilliant; it’s the best ballad I’ve heard in years. The melody is gorgeous, the lyrics are relatable and tell a captivating story, and Mancini’s vocals are unbelievable. Thundermother takes the win for round five.

“Can You Feel It” (1981) by The Jacksons

“Can You Feel It” (2025) by Thundermother

Michael Jackson’s vocals are great on “Can You Feel It” and the song’s message of living in a peaceful world with more love and less hate is cool. Actually, that seems to be a common theme for a lot of Michael Jackson’s songs. Anyways, the song has a disco vibe to it and the melody is too happy for my cup of tea. Thundermother’s “Can You Feel It” gives major AC/DC vibes, everything from the riff to the catchy chorus. I can even hear Angus Young doing the solos for the song; by the way, props to Filippa Nässil for her killer guitar playing. Thundermother takes the win for round six.

The obvious winner of this battle is Thundermother. Gosh, where was this band when I did My Top 10 Favorite Songs of All Time with Female Vocalists post? I would’ve easily put “Hot Mess” as runner up to Olivia Newton-John’s “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” That’s what I get for being late to the game, but it’s ok, better late than never! The heart and soul of Thundermother is Nässil, who’s been leading the pack for almost 15 years now. If it helps, Lemmy Kilmister was also a fan of the female rockers. But enough of me blabbering, check out Thundermother and get ready for some old school rock ‘n’ roll!

  1. First of all, Lana, I would like to thank you for introducing me to Thundermother. They sound like a great band, in fact my only slight disagreement here is that I would take their song over Triumph’s and that’s saying something because I really like Triumph.

    1. Thanks so much for reading, Mike! That’s cool you picked the Thundermother song over the Triumph song. That round was really hard for me because both songs are brilliant! Glad I turned you onto a new band.
