Aerosmith just announced that they are postponing all of their currently scheduled dates for their Peace Out farewell tour to sometime in 2024, due to frontman Steven Tyler’s vocal injury. On September 11, 2023, the band previously announced that Tyler sustained vocal cord damage during their September 9 show in New York at the UBS Arena and as a result, he was instructed to not sing for the next thirty days. After postponing a few dates, they initially planned to get back on the road in October, but unfortunately, fans are going to have to wait longer to say goodbye to the American rock band.
Aerosmith released a statement on September 29, noting that Tyler’s vocal injury is more serious than anticipated. In addition to damaged vocal cords, he fractured his larynx, which requires ongoing care. He’s receiving the necessary medical treatment, but in order for him to make a full recovery, the band is postponing all their currently scheduled Peace Out farewell tour dates to 2024.
“I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world. I promise we will be back as soon as we can!”, said Tyler in the statement.
All previously purchased tickets will be valid and refunds will be available for those who can’t attend the rescheduled dates.
I had a bad feeling about Aerosmith’s Peace Out farewell tour as soon as it was announced in May, given the nature of farewell tours (I’m looking at you, Kiss and Mötley Crüe). But, I never expected something as extreme as this to happen. I don’t wish ill health on anyone, believe me. But, due to the band’s history, I should’ve known that something was going to go wrong eventually.
Aerosmith are a cursed band, let’s be real, and it’s not just because the members couldn’t get along with each other. At a Philadelphia show in 1977, a fan threw an M-80 on stage, burning Tyler’s cornea and rupturing an artery in guitarist Joe Perry’s hand. More than a year later, Tyler was injured again in Philadelphia when a fan threw a beer bottle from the balcony. Considering the bad blood between Aerosmith and Philly, I’m surprised they decided to return there for the opening date of the farewell tour.
Drummer Joey Kramer has been in and out of the group in recent years due to health problems. Following his recovery from a shoulder injury in 2019, Aerosmith refused to let him play with the group at the 2020 Grammys. As a result, Kramer sued the band for being denied the opportunity to be recognized for his contribution to the music industry and the band’s legacy. He rejoined Aerosmith onstage in February 2020, but he took a leave of absence in 2022 to focus on his health and family.
Tyler hasn’t been doing so hot either, even before he damaged his vocal cords. In late May of 2022, Tyler checked into a rehab facility after he relapsed during his recovery from foot surgery, forcing Aerosmith to cancel the June and July dates of their 2022 Las Vegas residency. Tyler later developed an illness, forcing the band to cancel the final dates of their residency on December 2, 5, 8, and 11. And I thought Def Leppard were a cursed band.
Despite how I feel about Aerosmith, it really is a shame that the Peace Out farewell tour is turning out like this, considering how much time and effort was put into it. Also, the Peace Out farewell tour was a great opportunity for opening act The Black Crowes to gain more exposure. I mean, if you look up clips on YouTube, you’ll notice that the arenas were packed with people. What are they supposed to do now, play lowkey gigs and wait for an opportunity to release a new studio album? Like seriously, The Black Crowes already postponed their Shake Your Money Maker tour because of the COVID-19 pandemic, haven’t they suffered enough?
Ok, but seriously, I hope Steven Tyler makes a full recovery because like I mentioned before, Aerosmith put a lot of time and effort into the farewell tour and they deserve to have a good sendoff for the fans. You know, instead of, “we can’t play anymore, bye!” I am nervous about what the future holds for Aerosmith in 2024, considering how many dates they’ve canceled already and Tyler’s unreliable health, but let’s just hope their luck changes by then.

I knew someone who was at the bottle throwing show in Philly and then Aerosmith said they were never coming back. Fortunately, they did return and I got to see them in 1986. However, while they were good, it was clear they weren’t giving their best. In fact, when I got to England and a fan told me that he was jealous because I got to see them live, my advice was not to see Aerosmith in Philadelphia because they won’t give their best performance. Maybe it’s time Aerosmith retired, I wouldn’t judge them for it.

You knew someone who attended the bottle throwing show in Philly? Dang! I guess after both incidents, Aerosmith was like, ” you don’t give a dang about us, so why should we give a dang about you?” They should’ve retired a long time ago.
