My Top 10 Wiggles Songs

And you guys thought that AC/DC was my favorite Australian music group! Oh no, long before I discovered them, I was a massive fan of The Wiggles, an Australian children’s music group that are best known for classics like “Fruit Salad,” “Can You (Point Your Fingers and Do the Twist?),” and “Hot Potato.” They are also responsible for the terrifying Wiggle Puppets that wrecked me as a kid; I’d love to rip their heads off and toss them in a fire. But anyways, we’re here to talk about my happy memories of The OG Wiggles because that’s what I grew up with, which means none of the current Wiggles (and Sam Moran). I thought doing a countdown of my top 10 Wiggles songs would be a good way to go, so let’s get on with the music!

10. “Unto Us, This Holy Night” from Wiggly, Wiggly Christmas (1996)

I love Greg Page’s voice in this song. He shows some range when he starts off low and then goes high when he sings the line, “unto us, this holy night.” Page was my favorite member of The Wiggles, so of course, I was devastated when he first retired from the group in 2006. However, thanks to the internet, I can revisit his classic tunes and remember all of the good times he had with the guys. “Unto Us, This Holy Night” has a pretty melody, the harmonies are tight, and the trumpet in the instrumental section was a nice touch. It’s my favorite Christmas song The Wiggles have ever done.

9. “I Love It When It Rains” from Here Comes a Song (1992)

I played percussion in high school, so that xylophone  (I think that’s a xylophone) part before the second verse is music to my ears. I used to hate the short length of “I Love It When It Rains,” but I’ve come to accept that some songs are meant to be short. Still, I wonder what the song would’ve been like if it had one more verse. It goes by so fast, as it’s only a little over a minute, that I don’t have enough time to enjoy the lyrics and melody of the tune. 

8. “Play Your Guitar with Murray” from Hoop Dee Doo: It’s a Wiggly Party (2001)

This song is all about Murray Cook, the king of guitars! The song already has a catchy riff with a fun chorus, but it’s so much fun listening to it live. Cook is rocking out on stage, while Anthony Field and Jeff Fatt are trying to get the Murray statue up and ready. Like many rock guitarists, Cook plays around with the guitar solo and throws in a few licks whenever he can. 

7. “Romp Bomp a Stomp” from Wake Up Jeff! (1996)

“Romp Bomp a Stomp” is more of a dance song, rather than a sing-along song, but it still has a fun beat and brings back so much nostalgia for me; Wake Up Jeff! (1996) is one of my favorite Wiggles videos. The guys really work up a sweat by doing all of that jumping, twisting, and swaying from side to side; being a Wiggle ain’t easy. I don’t know why they got rid of Dorothy the Dinosaur’s lines in later versions of the tune, but it doesn’t deviate from the original too much. If you’re looking for a good workout, though, “Romp Bomp a Stomp” is the song to dance to!

6. “Wake Up Jeff!” from Wake Up Jeff! (1996)

I wasn’t kidding when I said Wake Up Jeff! was one of my favorite Wiggles videos. Cook does a mean guitar solo and I love how all of the Wiggly mascots (except for Captain Feathersword) are mentioned in the verses. Like a lot of Wiggles tunes, “Wake Up Jeff!” is a whole different story when performed live. Fatt pretends to be asleep and every time the gang sings, “wake up Jeff,” he lifts his head and neck up for a bit, then leans forward again (proving that he’s not awake yet). It’s hard to explain, let’s just say, I’m surprised Fatt never broke his neck after performing “Wake Up Jeff!” live. 

5. “Captain’s Magic Buttons” from Hoop Dee Doo: It’s a Wiggly Party (2001)

Captain Feathersword (played by Paul Paddick) is the star of this song! If you’ve seen The Wiggles live (with Page), I envy you because Paddick is hilarious when he’s playing Captain Feathersword. Whether it’s his high-pitched voice, fake crying, or celebrity impressions, Paddick always puts a smile on the crowds’ faces. He does impressions of a rockstar, an opera singer, and a robot in “Captain’s Magic Buttons.” I thought the lyrics were so complicated as a kid, but now that I know all of the words, I can’t get them out of my head!

4. “Captain Feathersword Fell Asleep on His Pirate Ship (Quack Quack)” from Wiggledance! (1997)

The instrumental track with the trumpet and piano made me appreciate “Quack Quack” more as an adult. As a kid, you just dance and sing along to the music, but when you’re an adult, you start to realize what great musicians these guys were, especially when watching live clips. I love seeing how creative the guys got with their costumes for the song; for Wiggledance! (1997), The Wiggles had rooster and duck hats, while they were dressed as pirates for The Wiggly Big Show (1999). Besides, who doesn’t love making animal noises?!?!

3. “Another Cuppa” from It’s a Wiggly Wiggly World (2000)

I’m not even sure if “Another Cuppa” counts because it wasn’t written by The Wiggles or the Field siblings, instead, it was written by John and Susan Edward. The Wiggles made tweaks to the song and the result was this catchy tune about Captain Feathersword being addicted to Dorothy’s rosy tea. No joke, during my sophomore year of college, I was watching It’s a Wiggly Wiggly World! (2000) at UH Manoa’s Campus Center, then “Another Cuppa” came on and I started singing it at the top of my lungs. There are great harmonies in this tune, it’s very complex as Page and Paddick sing lines at the same time, the lyrics are freaking catchy, and it’s a cute concept. Since “Another Cuppa” only appeared in the It’s a Wiggly Wiggly World! video and album of the same name, it’s highly underrated.

2. “Dorothy the Dinosaur” from The Wiggles (1991)

Speaking of underrated, “Dorothy the Dinosaur” was from the first Wiggles album ever, which was released in 1991. It was performed live really early in The Wiggles’ career, from about 1992 to 1996. After Wiggledance! and Wiggle Time (1998), however, the tune was never heard again, until the new Wiggles revamped the track with a new arrangement and different lyrics in 2021. “Dorothy the Dinosaur” was adapted from a tune by The Cockroaches titled, “It’s Another Saturday Night.” It’s a fun, rocking dance song with an entertaining story that’ll have you wanting more; just don’t look up the new Wiggles’ version!

1. “Toot Toot, Chugga Chugga, Big Red Car” from Toot Toot! (1998)

I couldn’t decide between “Toot Toot, Chugga Chugga, Big Red Car” or “Big Red Car,” but I went with the former because it’s a classic. I remember how upset I got after watching a so-called Wiggles “fan” get “Toot Toot, Chugga Chugga, Big Red Car” and “Big Red Car” mixed up. She was competing in a Wiggles quiz show segment against Field and Fatt on The Merrick & Rosso Show (2008 – 2009); the worst part was that the host gave her the point to win the game. Both songs are completely different, by the way, if you’re reading this, so-called “fan”! But anyways, it’s fun to do the motions to “Toot Toot, Chugga Chugga, Big Red Car” and sing-along with the lyrics that match all of The Wiggles’ personalities!

There you have it! Those are my top 10 songs by The Wiggles. I’m not ashamed to say that I still listen to The Wiggles (the original guys) because I love revisiting my childhood. Watching clips of the guys keeps me grounded, especially when this crazy world irritates me so much and I forget about where I come from. Dang, that was deep!
