AC/DC IS BACK – Here’s What You Need to Know!

It’s official, AC/DC is back! There are no more assumptions about whether or not Cliff Williams rejoined the group or if an album is yet to be released. It’s happening, and the boys are back better than ever!

Following the leaked photos posted on the band’s website about two weeks ago (then removed shortly afterward), fans were speculating that the Australian rockers were, indeed, planning to release new material. The question, though, was when? Not long after that, on Sunday, Sept. 27, AC/DC updated their social media channels with the redesigned iconic lightning bolt from their logo. They also posted a clip of the flickering lightning bolt.

To make it more dramatic, the band also deleted EVERYTHING from their Instagram account; oddly enough, that was the only social media channel where they deleted their past content. So when I saw that, I knew AC/DC meant serious business!

A day later, a picture got posted outside of Ashfield Boys High School, where a 15-year-old Angus Young dropped out around 1970, showcasing a flyer with the title ‘PWR/UP.’ It also included the URL pwrup.acdc.com, where fans can buy merch or sign up for their mailing list. The website listed the roles “Lead Guitar,” “Lead Vocals,” “Bass Guitar,” “Drums,” and “Rhythm Guitar,” however, whoever filled those roles was still unknown. But fans hinted that the new album would be called PWR/UP, based on the clues they got so far.

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the band posted another clip featuring a quick overview of the band’s logo. Then the next day (Wednesday, Sept. 30), AC/DC posted a pic of the current lineup for the group, again with the title ‘PWR/UP.’ The lineup would feature Angus Young on lead guitar, Brian Johnson on lead vocals, Cliff Williams on bass guitar, Phil Rudd on drums, and Stevie Young on rhythm guitar. At that point, fans were losing their minds. It became official that Rudd, Johnson, and Williams were back. I bet a lot of us fans were like, “thank goodness!” We weren’t going to settle for a different lineup anyway.

The updates kept on coming when the band posted a teaser for their new song, “Shot in the Dark,” on Thursday, Oct. 1. I don’t know about you, but I could tell that the riff was something Malcolm Young wrote. The late rhythm guitarist, who was diagnosed with dementia, retired from AC/DC in September 2014 due to his declining health. He died from the illness on Nov. 18, 2017.

On Friday, Oct. 2, the band posted more pics promoting the album (supposedly), and now we have more certainty that the new album would be called PWR/UP. That same day, Dodge, an American brand of automobiles, posted a new ad featuring “Shot in the Dark.” Dodge loves AC/DC! The ad pays homage to the movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), which featured AC/DC’s “T.N.T.” Gary Cole stars as Reese Bobby; while driving a dark green Dodge Durango, he tells a young Ricky Bobby and Cal Naughton Jr. not to forget the motto, “If you ain’t first, you’re last.”

On Monday, Oct. 5, AC/DC released a second teaser for “Shot in the Dark” with a little behind the scenes with the guys. According to the post, the new single will be out on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 12:00 a.m. NYC; 5:00 a.m. London, and 3:00 p.m. Sydney. I live in Hawaii, so for me, that would be on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6:00 p.m.

Stevie Young, Mal and Angus’ nephew, replaced Malcolm Young in 2014 due to Young’s illness. Rudd had to step out of AC/DC’s 2015-2016 Rock or Bust tour due to being under house arrest. Johnson had to leave after the fifth leg of the same tour or risk total hearing loss. Williams retired from the music industry altogether after the tour finished.

Again, rumors started speculating about an AC/DC reunion in August 2018 when Johnson and Rudd got spotted outside Vancouver’s Warehouse Studios, where AC/DC previously recorded some of their albums.

Let me know in the comments below your thoughts on AC/DC releasing new material and what you think of the new album title!

Take care and see ya real soon!

    1. Thanks so much Kevin! I apreciate you for reading my posts. And seems like it, I hope I got the time right. The different time zones are so confusing lol. That’s the only Dodge commercial I’ve ever seen and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Great marketing using “Shot in the Dark.”

      1. I will sometimes but Richard knows nothing about music. We started as a video podcast but we mostly talk about movies and just stuff going on. The one Mike Landano does every week is music focus and I have been on that often. We’re going to be talking about Eddie Van Halen on Friday.

      2. Aw that’s cool you and your friend get to talk about other interests on your podcast (movies is a cool topic too). Ah the great Eddie Van Halen. I never dove deep into Van Halen’s catalog, but I’ve seen clips of Eddie playing and he will dearly be missed.
