I became a fan of One Direction back in middle school. Harry Styles was my favorite member, but I loved all of them. I even wrote a song about Harry, but that’s another story! I bought all of their albums until Midnight Memories (2013), then I stopped because I thought I was supposed to.
High school is a weird time for most teenagers because there’s peer pressure, more people to compare yourself to, cliques and stereotypes, and possibly annoying teachers. I thought it was uncool to like boybands, so I tried my best to put my fangirl phase aside, and turn to more mature bands like Pierce the Veil, Sleeping with Sirens, Black Veil Brides, and All Time Low, etc. While I still listen to Sleeping with Sirens, I lost interest in the other bands eventually.
I just wanted to fit in, and I think part of me was self-conscious of my school presentation in sixth grade, where the boys in my class made weird faces when I had a pic of Justin Bieber included. Maybe, I was in my own world at the time, but I never saw many girls at my high school obsess over boybands, which terrified me. There were a few girls that liked boybands, at least in my classes. Even when some fangirls joined the marching band, I still kept up with the act.
It wasn’t until my freshman-sophomore year of college that I got into One Direction again. However, by that time, One Direction was on a hiatus, and Zayn Malik already left at that point. A similar thing happened to my favorite TV shows I gave up towards the end of high school. I stopped watching Austin and Ally, and then a year later, the show ended. I stopped watching Girl Meets World, and then a year later, the series got canceled.
I let my fears of people making fun of me for liking One Direction get the best of me, and to this day, I immediately regret it! Even though I enjoy hard rock and heavy metal bands such as AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Metallica now, I still sing along to One Direction whenever I get the chance because it brings back happy memories for me. Also you have to admit, they have some pretty catchy songs! One Direction reminds me of when I didn’t care what people thought of me, which is why I’m never letting go of their music again!
One Direction recently celebrated their 10th anniversary on July 23, 2020, so all of the feels are coming back! If there’s one thing I learned from One Direction, it’s don’t give up hobbies you love for the sake of other people. If it makes you happy, then do it and don’t worry about how other people would react. Whether that’d be watching your favorite TV show, playing guitar, or obsessing over boybands. Maybe One Direction is not for everyone, but if it were another band of your interest, hold onto them!
If One Direction doesn’t get back together, then I’ll support the boys’ solo careers (at least Harry, Louis, and Niall’s). I never got to see 1D live, so seeing Harry Styles in concert would be the closest thing to that, for now.
