My First Semester in PRSSA

This past semester, I took a risk and joined a new club at UH Manoa. The club was called the Public Relations Student Society of America. PRSSA is a club for Communication majors to make friends and learn more about the different pathways in the Communication field. After my COM 201 professor mentioned it to me, I became interested and wanted to check it out. I was already intrigued by the first meeting, not just because the COM department sounded interesting, but by how friendly the people were. I remember I forgot my rubber band that day, so another girl offered to let me use hers.

The meetings for PRSSA take place weekly. The reason why is that PRSSA holds workshops for speakers in the COM field to speak with us. My favorite speaker is the food blogger that came to talk to us about blogging and social media. Another speaker taught us how to write for social media too, and talked about what details you need to put on a post and how to grab the audience’s attention. Other workshops were for topics dealing with work burnout, elevator pitches, and building resumes.

Although we only had a few socials, they were a lot of fun. The main events were Career Day and End-Of-Semester Dinner. It was two events in one day! Career day is when we wear business attire, visit different job sites, build connections with these professionals, and see what these jobs are all about! Then later in the evening, we went to Buca Di Beppo for dinner. We had so many leftovers from that!

The Public Relations Student Society of America allowed me to break away from my shy persona, connect with new people, and talk about things other than Disney. It also helped that the officers in the club welcomed me with open arms and always tried to include the members in their conversations and activities. Before this semester, especially in the Disney Ohana Club, I didn’t talk much, and I doubted myself a lot. So, I tried my hardest to break away from that, and it’s still an ongoing process. For now, I’m making the best of it, and I’m loving every minute of being a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America. I can’t wait to see what Spring 2020 has in store for the club and me!

Do you guys have any extracurricular activities? What are they? I’d love to know, leave me a comment down below to start a conversation!

Take care and see ya real soon!
